Goal Post Dimensions
Depending upon whether you play American Football in School, College or the NFL there are minor variations on the field markings or where the Equipment and
Personnel should be situated. As the Bolton Bulldogs play in the British American Football League (BAFL), the league adopts the NCAA College dimensions
and markings as shown in the diagram to the left.
The dimensions of a regulation National Football League (NFL) field are indicated below with the variations:
Overall Dimensions
All fields share the same overall outside dimensions, where the outside measurement includes those of the End Zone
Length: 360 feet or 120 yards
Width: 160 feet or 53 1/3 yards
End Zones
The End Zones in all games that keep to the American Dimensions are 10 yards deep
Restraining Line
Six feet outside the border of the field is a broken white line that defines an area in which only coaches and substitute players may stand.
Six feet further behind this line is where the Team bench area begins. This line designates the closest non-players can be to the field of play.
Team Benches
Team Benches are placed along the 6 feet Restraining Line and between the 25 yard line markers
College/High School:
Generally these are not as restrictive as the NFL, but do adhere to the
same dimensions, particularly the 25 yard line delimits the ends
Field Numbers
NFL Field numbers are 6 feet high and 4 feet wide. The top of the numbers are 9 yards from each sideline
Hash Marks
NFL Hash marks are the narrowest of all the levels of football playing areas. They measure 70 feet, 9 inches in from the sidelines and
are 18 feet, 6 inches apart in the middle of the field (same as the width of the Goal Posts), with each Hash mark being 2 feet in length.
College:
Measure 60 feet in from the sideline and 40 feet apart
High School:
Measure 46 feet, 6 inches from the sideline and 53 feet, 4 inches apart
Every Hash mark indicates movement down the field by 1 yard. At every 5 yards a solid white line runs from sideline to sideline. At every 10 yards these solid lines are numbered 10 through to 40 as you move away from each End Zone and normally have a painted white arrow (18 inches high and 36 inches wide) pointing back towards the closest End Zone. Whilst the 50 yard line is marked by the number 50 and without any arrows as this indicates the middle of the field.
Goal Posts
NFL Goal Posts are 10 feet high to the
cross-member. The overall height to the top of the Goal Post is a
minimum of 30 feet and the width between the uprights being 18 feet,
6 inches apart. The Goal Posts can be painted white or Yellow and
each post is normally topped off by a 4 inch wide x 42 inch length
ribbon.
High School
10 feet to the cross-member, but width between the upright is
23 feet,4 inches.
Pylons
These indicate the End Zone. Each Pylon is 18 inches high and measure 4 inches x 4 inches wide.
